Subject
Geminivirus-host plant interaction
Interactions between viral and plant proteins are essential for reprogramming cellular processes and thus for a successful viral life cycle. At the same time, they provide targets for the development of new, customized, anti-viral methods.
Main focus: Investigation of the cell biological and molecular basis of intra- and intercellular viral transport and pathogenicity as well as plant macromolecular transport processes by analyzing:
- Viral exploitation and induced restructuring of cell structures (e.g. cytoskeleton and endomembrane system)
- Protein-protein interactions (virus-host cell & virus-virus)
- Regulation of the multifunctionality of viral porters by post-translational modification (e.g. phosphorylation)
Phytoviral Diagnostics
Molecular tools for monitoring and identification of plant viruses.
Main focus: Nucleic acid-based detection of plant viruses by isothermal amplification, e.g. phi29-based rolling circle amplification (RCA) of circular viral DNA and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis.
Phytoviral Engineering
Utilization of plant virus genomes and their highly efficient regulatory elements for vector systems.
Main focus: Plant virus-based expression and silencing vectors for biotechnology & functional genomic analysis, including heterologous expression of scaffold proteins for nanostructured 3D-printed tissue equivalents and of therapeutic antibodies.
